The night before opening day for Little League Baseball my mother had me sleep at my friends house across the street because she and Mr. Hart were going out to a late dinner. When I came home from my game, there was a pretty big rock on my mother's finger, and she was in an uncommonly good mood. With a mental prowess far superior to most fifth graders, I was vaguely able to recall that big rings and good moods often coincide with marriage. I made a mental note to have a serious talk with Annsley in order to warn her of a possible engagement. However, I didn't get the chance. Mom immediately sat me down at the table with Mr. Hart, and told me that they were getting married. I was pretty excited because that meant that I would be a step-uncle, and I'd be able to boss people around. I guess that I took it a little better than Annsley, whom they had told the previous night. She had screamed, cried, and locked herself in the bathroom for a few hours.
